Staubach Honoraria Winners, 2010, Are Announced !
The Jury consisting of Hans Thomalia, Martin Iddon and Thomas Schäfer has reviewed the acceptable applications - some 82 out of a total of 120 - a number of applicants were not considered because of the age limitations of the awards. The five winners selected are: Malin Bang (Sweden), Aaron Michael Einbond (USA), Evan Gardner (USA), Mauricio Pauly (Costa Rica) and Stefan Prins (Belgium). In addition to a scholarship for the upcoming International Summer Course 2010 at IMD Darmstadt, each composer is commissioned to write a new piece for one of invited new ensembles. The IMD initiated the following pairings: Stefan Prins will compose a piece for Ensemble Nikel (Israel), Aaron Einbond will work together with Ensemble Cairn (France), Malin Bång writes for Nadar (Belgium), Evan Gardner for Jack Quartet (USA) and Mauricio Pauly will contribute a new piece to the project with Asamisimasa (Norway).

Because of the high quality of applicants, several additional composers are considered worthy by IMD so that they will be invited to attend the Summer Classes but not participate in the Honoraria benefits.
History and Rules for the Staubach Honoraria for Composition.
In August, 2009, Harry met with Herr Doktor Thomas Schäfer in Darmstadt to discuss a new concept for continued participation of the Foundation with the Internationales Musikinstitut, Darmstadt, Germany. Dr. Schäfer, as the newly appointed Director, has decided to take several new approaches in the conduct of the International Courses for New Music such that a continuation of Der Staubachpreis was not deemed appropriate. Also, it is his intent to reduce .. and even eliminate .. the competitive spirit that had pervaded through these bi-annual meetings.
Accordingly, Der Staubachpreis was set aside and it was agreed that a series of five HONORARIA be established that would allow composers (28 to 35) from anywhere in the world to attend the Courses under a scholarship for room and board and a small allowance of 300EURO. In addition, each composer would have a performance of a new work by one of the outstanding ensembles in attendance during the Summer Courses.
Below is the result of these efforts:
Please NOTE ! The following material is provided here for information only ! While the Foundation will gladly provide answers where it can, all composers are directed to use the procedures and Application Form provided at the new official website of the Internationales Muzikinstitut, Darmstadt ....www.imd.darmstadt.de which will be posted in mid-September 2009. In cases of disagreement between the following and any other source of this material, the reading of the IMD website takes controlling precedence.
The Staubach Honoraria for Composition
within the 45th International New Music Courses Darmstadt 2010
These grants are administered by the Internationales Musikinstitut Darmstadt (IMD) (Germany) and are awarded for its Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik (International New Music Courses) in even-numbered years. The grants are funded by The Harry and Alice Eiler Foundation, Inc. (USA) to honor Harry’s maternal grandfather, Gotthard Josef (Charles) Staubach, who was born and grew up in the village of Herbstein, Hesse, north of Darmstadt.
The Staubach Honoraria for Composition were established to encourage young composers from anywhere in the world to participate in the New Music Courses and provide a performance opportunity in Darmstadt by a renowned ensemble. Composers are normally expected to be between the ages of 28 to 35, inclusive, on the submission deadline for the call for scores. Exceptions may be made if an applicant demonstrates a compelling reason why their compositional development has been in some way delayed. Any decisions in this regard are entirely at the discretion of the jury.

The mission of the jury will be to use the submitted materials to seek out young composers who have demonstrated significant musical talent and insights into the continued advancement of new music. The applicant's need for financial assistance will be a secondary consideration whenever two or more applicants have equal parity in the primary considerations.
3. AMOUNT OF HONORARIUM
